In this video you’ll see breeds like the Tibetan mastiff, which is so rare that purebred puppies can sell for as much as $2 million; the Carolina dog, which is related to the dingo and was discovered in a nuclear reservation in South Carolina; and the otterhound, which was bred specifically for otter hunting, but when otter hunting became illegal the otterhound became endangered. We’ll also tell you about a breed that was created as part of a Czechoslovakian science experiment, a breed that hunts gazelles on the African savannah, and a breed that dwindled to six individuals but was saved by a few heroic breeders. Most of the breeds in this video have global populations of less than a thousand – which is a staggering fact when one considers that there are over a million golden retrievers in the U.S. alone. We’re giving golden retrievers a day off as we admire 10 lesser known but just as deserving dogs.
