Not so long ago i made a video about TOP 10 Chinese dog breeds. But i did not mention any of the Tibetan breeds, although, Tibet is officialy part of China nowadays. As you will see in this video, Tibet really is home to some of the most popular dog breeds in the whole world. Well, lets look at all of them!
6) Tibetan Kyi Apso
Lets start with the one Tibetan breed, you probably never heard of. At least i never heard about Tibetan Kyi Apso before. It is big, more than 40 kgs heavy, livestock guardian, which is very rare. You will probably not find anywhere outside Tibet. This breed is considered as primitive, but they are very playfull.
5) Tibetan Spaniel
This one is not that big, actually Tibetan Spaniel is pretty small breed, with weight only around 5 kgs. Some people can mistake them with Pekingse, and they actually have very similar ancestry. Dont get fooled by Tibetan Spaniel small size, they are very alert watchdogs and they will let you know whenever stranger come close to your home!
4) Tibetan Terrier
Beautifull shaggy coated terrier, which is super loyal to its family. But they can be little bit mischievous, that is true. They are also very intelligent and sensitive. Their history is associated with Buddhists monasteries, which resembles in their nickname – Holy Dog of Tibet. Tibetan Terrier has amazing lifespan – 15 to 17 years.
3) Lhasa Apso
My favourite small guard dog. Lhasa Apso looks almost the same as Shih Tzu, but their personality are very different. Lhasa Apsos were bred to be guards, watchdogs and protectors and they have it in their personality to this day. They are very alert and they will let you know about any danger around your home. Lhasa apso is maybe the toughest and most strong-willed dog of all the small dog breeds.
2) Tibetan Mastiff
Majestic, noble, gentle and patient. These are the words, that are desribing beautiful breed of Tibetan Mastiff. Tibetan Mastiff is one of the most ancient and primitive dog breeds that are still alive today. They were originaly bred to guard livestock and of course, as amazing guard dogs in Tibet. If you decide to get Tibetan Mastiff, be prepared for independent dog, that need strong leader. My favourite thing about Tibetan Mastiff is their bark. They have very deep bark, which they use quite often.
1) Shih Tzu
Last dog on this list is probably the most popular one. It is Shih Tzu, one of the best known companion dogs around the world. Their name means little lion, but they are not fierce at all. They are opposite of Lhasa Apso, because they are not guards but typical lap dogs. Their life purpose is to love and to be loved. But they can be little bit mischievous, for example they love stealing shoes and chewing on them. But they will let you forget about that with their sweet natured and happy temperament.
