It is important that you give a healthy Mastiff food for your dog. Animal need the right combination of food with the right diet like essential minerals, vitamins and fats as well as the correct quantity of food. Because Mastiff is said to be lazy and doesn’t run around as much as other breeds, they can quickly become obese due to overfeeding and lack of exercise. This is a deadly combination.
Like us, pets need a balanced diet with a mixture of protein, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. The quantities of each will depend on the age of the animal. Dogs need a certain amount of protein to keep their coats and nails in tip-top condition. It also helps build body tissue and repairs any injuries the animal may have received. As they reach old age, they will require lesser amounts of protein. An overdose of protein will lead to liver and kidney problems so be careful and only use food in recommended quantities.
Carbohydrates are present in cereals, dog biscuits and other treats and are an important part of your animal’s diet. Calcium and phosphorous are very important minerals but it is extremely easy to overdo these which can cause problems. An overdose of phosphorus can cause eclampsia or high blood pressure in pregnant bitches. A highly concentrate calcium is especially dangerous for large breeds such as the Mastiff. There are some good proprietary brands of dog food that are specially formulated for large breeds like the Mastiff.
Just like humans, dogs need vitamin A and B vitamins to keep their nervous system healthy. Don’t forget to give your pet plenty of water particularly if you are using a dry food. Keep their water bowl clean and always use fresh water to avoid infections.
You can feed them either commercial or homemade dog food, but if using the latter, you will need to make an extra effort to ensure all their nutritional needs are being met. Homemade dog food is economical and easy to prepare. Commercially prepared food may be more expensive but could work out cheaper in the long run if it helps you to avoid the Vet. You may want to consult your vet for advice on the best food for your animal. Using commercially prepared food in the recommended quantities usually means you avoid overdosing your pet with minerals and vitamins. Be careful with dry food as storing it for too long can cause it to go rancid and lose all nutritional value. Don’t be tempted to buy in bulk unless you are the owner of a few dogs, only buy sufficient for your animal’s needs.
Do not feed your sweet animal treats such as chocolate. Yes, they love the taste, but it is very bad for them and may prove fatal. If you think your animal is missing out, you can buy specially prepared chocolate drops for dogs. If you want to have a healthy Mastiff, diet plays a huge part and should be the one thing all dog owners can get right with a little care and attention.
